Do you need a Behaviourist or a Trainer?
For a Behaviourist the goal is to assess each dog individually and help to modify their behaviour. Behaviourists encounter dogs who have already developed some type of negative, unwanted or problem behaviour. We seek to identify and treat the issue;
kind of like therapists for dogs...
A Dog Trainer is more like a teacher or coach, they equip dogs with the tools they need to perform in a variety of different situations, from basic obedience to agility and more complex service roles.
The role of the Behaviourist is to advise, help and support owners whose pets have developed problem behaviours. This is different from the training offered by Dog Trainers.

I am a force free Behaviourist.
This means that I refuse to use force, intimidation, scare tactics, pain or aversive tools to make any animal do what humans want them to do.
It has been proven that you cannot use aversive techniques to counter condition a dog - at most you will only temporarily suppress the behaviour, because the dog is trying to avoid the 'correction'. Meanwhile you are building an even more negative association with being around their triggers, This leads to more stress which will cumulate into even more behavioural issues. You cannot 'correct'a dog fro reacting to their individual triggers - fear is not a voluntary choice - so it makes no sense to tell a dog off for a reaction that they have no control over. Comon Behavioural problems include, but are not limited to, such things as reactivity towards people, dogs or other animals, destructiveness, separation anxiety, obsessive behaviours.
I work alongside your primary veterinary care, it is important that your dog sees your vet prior to any behaviour modification to rule out any underlying condition that may be causing or contributing to the behaviour.
If your dog is struggling with behavioural issues I can help you work with them in an empathetic way, understanding them and working effectively to address and alleviate the problems. Working to change how they feel and enabling long term change.
I do not offer 'board and train' as It is really important that you as the owner are involved so that you have the tools to continue to work effectively and empathetically with your dog going forward.
